I first came across these beautiful wooden chairs when I came to live in northern Portugal many years ago, where they made up part of the family’s chairs sitting on the terrace.
I fell in love with them straight away with their simple lines and the fact that they are made of wood with a special slope giving good back support and slightly lifting one’s legs.
They are traditionally painted in dark green (matching the traditional dark green of the doors and window frames that are frequently found on well-to-do Portuguese homes) and would adorn old back terraces looking out over beautiful gardens where one could sit for hours on end relaxing on a summer’s afternoon.
They are rather hard to find now but I have seen them available in a great market held in Barcelos (north of Portugal) every Thursday.
Now all I need is the old house with the terrace to be able to have them!
